Drivers and pedestrians can expect phased construction and traffic shifts on Newton Road near the Dental Science Building from Monday, June 2, through Friday, June 27. This road work supports the Arena Parking Ramp project and will occur in three phases, starting just east of Newton Road and Elliot Drive and continuing east to Lincoln Avenue.

Expect intermittent delays and plan for extra travel time.

In phases 1 and 2, the south and then north sides of the road will be closed for widening, though two-way traffic will be maintained.

In the final phase, traffic will be reduced to one lane with alternating traffic managed by flaggers. Motorists are encouraged to take alternate routes via Hawkins Drive and Elliot Drive. Accessible parking and walkways in the Dental Patient Lot will remain open throughout. 

Beginning June 2, the Newton and Lincoln bus stop near the Dental Science Building will close temporarily, affecting westbound routes on Newton Road for Cambus, Iowa City Transit, and Coralville Transit. A temporary Cambus stop will be relocated just east of Woolf Avenue. Check with transit providers for updated route information and use designated crosswalks in the area.

The Newton Road widening project is expected to complete by Friday, June 27.
