Learn more about our campus landscape on the University of Iowa Campus by attending a tree tour or planting event! Tree tours take place during the spring, summer, and fall seasons and cover a variety of locations across campus from the Pentacrest, Medical Campus, our Literary Grove, and beyond.
Birds + Bees + Trees Tour
Registration for event required
Meet us at the One Earth Mural for a walking tour of UI’s downtown campus that highlights its many pollinator gardens and local bird species. Tours will take place at 12 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. on September 23. The Campus Arborist will be present to identify local tree species and speak about UI’s Tree Campus designation.
Tree Tour: Literary Grove at the Iowa Writers’ Workshop
Take a guided stroll through the Literary Grove, where each tree has a story to tell. Arborist Andy Dahl, Campus Arborist, will share the unique histories and literary connections of these remarkable trees, many linked to celebrated authors from the world-renowned Iowa Writers’ Workshop.
The Language of Trees: A Conversation with Katie Holten
The Anne Frank Initiative will welcome internationally recognized artist and environmental advocate Katie Holten to Iowa City for a conversation about her acclaimed project and book The Language of Trees.
Blending literature, visual art, and ecological thinking, The Language of Trees invites readers to see trees as storytellers, communicators, and keepers of cultural memory. During the event, Holten will discuss the ideas behind the project and explore how language, nature, and place intersect in Iowa City and beyond, and will be joined by Andy Dahl, Campus Arborist, among others.
