Stratton received her MFA and MA in Art from the University of New Mexico. She works in photography, as well as video, to explore the cultural politics of race and gender related issues such as incarceration, media stereotypes and icons in contemporary culture.
She has exhibited at the Houston Center for Photography; the Museum of Contemporary Photography, Chicago; the Smithsonian Institution, Washington D.C. among others as well as at many international film and video festivals. Her photographs and videos are represented in many collections including The Art Institute of Chicago, the Seattle Arts Commission, the George Eastman House, Rochester, NY, and the Library of Congress, Washington, DC. Stratton has received five National Endowment for the Arts Awards in Photography, Installation and New Genres in the United States and Canada.
