FM Environmental Services ensures that the University of Iowa is in compliance with all local, state, and federal environmental laws and regulations throughout the design and construction process and beyond, including asbestos evaluation and abatement, stormwater discharge and maintenance, lead compliance, indoor air quality, and radon sampling.

FM monitors a set of fire protection requirements designed to provide a reasonable degree of safety from fire. It covers construction, protection, and operational features designed to provide safety from fire, smoke, and panic.

Landscape Services provides for the stewardship and maintenance of turf management; shrub and flower bed care; tree care; sidewalk maintenance; snow removal; institutional road maintenance; and litter control.

Maintenance Stores

Maintenance Stores stocks maintenance and repair items including electrical, plumbing, hardware, carpentry, refrigeration, key supplies, sheet metal and tools. Maintenance Stores also includes a dispatch service transporting people as well as maintenance supplies and blueprints throughout campus.

Sidewalk and Road Maintenance

Snow, dirt, and debris removal is carried out to create a clean and safe campus environment. Sidewalks are maintained under the broader care of hardscape areas including plazas, retaining walls/outcropping stones, parking lots, and institutional roads.

 

Space Management

Facilities Information Services is responsible for space assignment, space planning and coordination, and recommendations regarding requests for campus space. Its services also support the campus long-range master planning needs and the annual on-going use of campus space.

Storm Water Management

The university maintains and implements a Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) permit that addresses storm water issues on our campuses.  Additionally, storm water discharge permits/NPDES (National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System), and Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plans (SWPPPs) are maintained as required.  Actions include reviewing and approving site plans, site monitoring, and outreach & education.

Utilities Production and Distribution

The UI Energy Collaborative provides reliable electricity, heating, and cooling to a 2,000-acre main campus, which is comprised of over 373 major buildings, including critical patient, research, and lab facilities. The system provides critical services to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, a research hospital that admits over 32,000 patients annually, providing backup in any grid failure.

The EPA establishes the Safe Drinking Water Standards and the Iowa DNR administers the Public Drinking Water Program in Iowa under delegation of authority from the EPA.  University of Iowa water meets all EPA Safe Drinking water standards and testing.
